Career Programs

BEOC career and short term programs prepare students for state or national industry certification credentials and entry-level jobs. Students who do not have industry related experience can access internship opportunities to gain on the job training and experience. While enrolled, students engage in career development activities with career advisors, and can participate in internships and externships for employment experience while in school.

Note:  A high school diploma or equivalency is required for all career programs, except for Security Guard Training. Prior work experience and training are also considered for admission if applicants do not meet TABE score requirements. Applicants without a diploma may enroll in the High School Equivalency Program, and upon completion, transfer to a career program.

DIRECT SUPPORT PROFESSIONAL
This program prepares students for entry-level employment as Direct Support Professionals. Students are trained to work with mentally ill, and/or developmentally disabled individuals of all ages, to help them attain independence, individuality, and productivity.

Applicants must have the ability to pass a physical examination and a background check; have no felony convictions, and may need a driver’s license or permit.

Upon completion, students obtain certification for Strategies for Crisis Intervention and Prevention (SCIP) and Approved Medication Administration Personnel (AMAP). Students also receive certification in CPR and First Aid.

MEDICAL ASSISTING
The Medical Assisting program prepares students for the administrative duties and clinical responsibilities of a medical assistant. The program prepares students in administering EKG/ECG, carrying out phlebotomy duties, performing first aid functions, assisting in medical procedures, preparing patients for examinations, and
assisting in medication administration. Students are expected to take certification examinations and seek employment upon completion of the program. Internships are recommended for students without prior related experience. This is a two-semester daytime program. Upon completion, students are prepared to take the following National Healthcareers Certification exams:

 

  • Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA)
  • Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA)
  • Certified EKG/ECG Technician (CET)
  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT)

Our Medical Assisting students have been hired for the following positions:  EKG Technician, Medical Assistant, Medical Records Clerk, Pharmacy Technician, and Phlebotomist.


PATIENT CARE TECHNICIAN PROGRAM 
The Patient Care Technician/Assistant Program prepares students to support nurses, physicians, and other medical staff with patient care. A patient care technician (PCT) may perform a variety of basic patient care skills and techniques under the supervision of a nurse or other medical staff. In addition, the PCT student trains to perform electrocardiograms (EKG/ECG) and venipuncture (phlebotomy). Upon completion, students are prepared to take the following National Healthcareers Certification exams:

  • Certified Patient Care Technician/Assistant (CPCT/A)
  • Certified EKG/ECG Technician (CET)
  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT)

Students will gain competency in the following areas:

  • Perform basic infection control practices in the Healthcare setting
  • Perform phlebotomy procedures
  • Use effective skills to draw blood and accurately label tubes
  • Perform basic 12-lead ECG/EKG technique and interpretation
  • Perform basic patient care skills

MEDICAL BILLING AND CODING
Medical Billing and Coding is an intensive accelerated program for individuals who want to build careers in the medical and health insurance fields. Students are expected to take certification examinations and seek employment upon completion of the program. This is a one-semester evening program.
Upon completion, students are prepared to take the following National Healthcareers Certification exams:

 

  • Certified Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS)
  • Certified Electronic Health Records Specialist (CEHRS)

Our Medical Billing & Coding students have been hired for the following positions: Billing Coordinator, Medical Office Clerk, Medical Receptionist, Medical Records Clerk, and Patient Coordinator.


OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH ACT (OSHA) 30 CONSTRUCTION

OSHA’s Safety and Health training provides information on specific safety and health hazards in different industries.        The course provides information on hazard identification and control, and existing OSHA standards where applicable.

This daytime certification training program is offered in partnership with other organizations, including the Department of Probation (Brooklyn), FedCap, and Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation. Certifications include OSHA 30-hour Construction and Site Safety Training.

SECURITY GUARD TRAINING
This program offers an introduction to the security environment. Students learn how to guard, patrol or monitor premises to prevent theft, violence or infraction of rules. Applicants must have the ability to pass a background check by New York State in order to obtain a license and job placement. This daytime program prepares students for the New York State 8-hour Pre-Assignment, 16-hour On the Job Training, and the FDNY Fire Guard Certification tests. BEOC pays for the cost of fingerprinting.

TOURISM AND HOSPITALITY OPERATIONS
This is an introductory intensive job training program in the Food and Beverage industry, Lodging, Recreation, and Travel and Tourism. It gives students an understanding of industry operations and requirements necessary for a career within the Hospitality sector, with a focus on New York City. Students are expected to seek training-related employment upon completion of the program.

An internship is highly recommended for those with no prior work experience.

This is a one-semester evening program. Upon completion, students are prepared for the following National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF) ManageFirst® Certifications exams:

  • Hospitality and Restaurant Management
  • Customer Service
  • ServSafe® (Food Safety)

Our Tourism & Hospitality Operations students have been hired for the following positions: Front Desk Agent, Guest Service Agent, Hospitality Specialist, Sales Coordinator, and Travel Specialist.


SKILLS DEVELOPMENT
This career preparation program is for students who want to improve their reading, math and basic computer skills.   The Skills Development program helps students prepare to improve their English and Math skills enabling them to retest and qualify for a BEOC career program. Coursework includes essential computer proficiency, English communication skills, and workplace mathematics.  Advancement is based on the successful completion of coursework and re-test scores.

OFFICE ADMINISTRATIVE PROFESSIONAL 
The program is designed to provide students with the essential computer and communication skills required for entry-level work as an administrative assistant. The program focuses on the development of both technical and professional communication proficiencies, and should prepare students to perform basic office procedures. Upon completion, students receive a certificate of completion and are eligible to sit for Microsoft certifications.
